UNA-USA Leaders Exchange Ideas

March 11, 2011

Dr. David Stillman, a board member of the UNA Southern New York State Division, represented the Humpty Dumpty Institute as keynote speaker at Sustainability Dialogue Day at Maricopa Community Colleges in Phoenix, Arizona.  The ten colleges have an enrollment of over 260,000 students.    Chancellor Rufus Glasper opened the event, which comprised about 100 faculty and senior staff.   Stillman spoke on “International Perspectives on Sustainability” and led a workshop on “International Resources for Sustainable Development.”    Chancellor Glasper is a signatory to the American Colleges and Universities Presidents’ Climate Commitment.  Stillman is Executive Director of the Public-Private Alliance Foundation.

Dr. Albert Celoza, President of the UNA Phoenix Chapter, invited Stillman to lunch with other Chapter leaders.  These included Paula Cullison, a past President (and a former New Yorker) who is now President of the Arizona Women’s Partnership, Inc., Kathy and David Schwarz, who just returned from Egypt, and Juan Mendez, who graduated from Arizona State and currently manages a non-profit organization.  Celoza is Dean of Liberal Arts and Director of International Studies at Phoenix Community College, and adviser to a prize-winning Model UN Team.  All shared ideas about UNA projects in which they’re involved and plans for the future.

In April the chapter and the Phoenix College Liberal Arts Lectures program will co-sponsor a World Health Day Symposium.  The topic will be Refugee Women’s Health: A Local and Global Perspective.   Phoenix is a destination for refugee placements by the State Department, International Rescue Committee and others.  In addition to remarks and keynote addresses from the Refugee Women’s Health Clinic of the Maricopa Integrated Health System, a panel of refugee women will discuss their experiences.  Dr. Celoza will moderate.

Gillian Sorensen, Senior Adviser at the UN Foundation and former UN Assistant Secretary-General, spoke to an event organized by the Phoenix Chapter and the Model UN in October 2010.

Stillman also had the chance to visit Chandler Gilbert Community College, where Professor Pushpa Ramakrishna assigns her biology class to projects related to the MDGs.  There he also visited a Model UN Preparatory Class, led by Prof. Noel Morelos.  Those students are preparing to represent China in the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council at a Model UN Conference in San Francisco in April.
